Being a missionary generally means wearing many hats and getting to work on a whole variety of different types of projects and ministries, so answering the question "What do you do?" isn't always simple. We do, however, each have a main job title. Dale is currently the Director of the Centre for the Advancement of the Handicapped. Florence is the point person for hospitality services at the SIM mission station in Mahadaga. In addition to these two main roles, we participate in our local church, play handy-man at home and around town, parent, and generally share our lives with our Burkinabe neighbors and friends. Below is a brief overview of some of our various tasks and responsibilities. | |
Director of the Centre for the Advancement of the Handicapped (CAH) | Hospitality Services |
---|---|
Dale leads the management team at the Centre. Dale oversees the planning and budgeting and supervises 6 department heads, which manage a staff of 34 Burkinabe employees and three ex-patriot missionaries. The Centre runs a school for the deaf and blind, an apprenticeship program for disabled young adults, a therapy program in Mahadaga, and a home-care program that stretches over 75 kilometers. Visit the CAH website for more information. | Florence is a full-time front-door answerer. Aside from running several guest houses at the mission, Florence also manages the guards, station employees, and distribution of charitable aide. She also helps coordinate and mentor short-term missionaries who come to Mahadaga. Basically, Florence is the go-to person for everyone who comes to the mission and who is not already a missionary. |
Church Treasurer | Women's Ministry |
Dale is an elder at the church and keeps the offering, helps with communion. | Florence leads a Bible study for the women in the winter and participates in the women's choir. |
Technical Projects | Other Admin Tasks |
Dale plays handy-man around the house and pitches in and helps with various maintenance and technical projects around the station, CSPS (medical clinic) and CAH when necessary. He's even helped set up simple solar power systems for some of our Burkinabe neighbors. | Florence also serves as a communications consultant for the CAH and has primary responsibility for the care of our two young children at home, including home-schooling. |
